Why DULIN exists
DULIN started from a simple problem: Iceland has many outdoor places, but the useful planning context is scattered across maps, public datasets, route sources, road information, weather services and personal research.
The goal is to build a clean, map-first planning tool for people who want to discover hidden outdoor places responsibly. That means combining points, routes, photos, access notes, field ratings, nearby conditions and filters in one interface.
How the map is maintained
DULIN data is cleaned and improved over time. Records are grouped into practical categories, checked for visibility and source quality, connected with photos where possible, and enriched with planning signals such as road access, season, river crossings, F-road context, protected-area notes and drone planning information.
The database is not static. Some records are corrected, hidden, upgraded, merged or deprioritized as better information becomes available. This is especially important in Iceland, where access, local rules, roads, protected areas and sensitive places can change.
Responsible discovery
DULIN is not designed to encourage blind pin collecting. A hidden place is only useful when the visitor understands whether access is public, whether the site is fragile, whether the season fits, whether drone use is appropriate and whether there are safer nearby alternatives.
The product is strongest when it helps a traveler decide what to skip. Avoiding a poor detour, a restricted drone flight, an unsuitable hot pot, a private hut or a risky road can be just as valuable as finding a new place.
Why part of it is paid
Keeping DULIN useful costs time and money. The project needs hosting, map tiles, database work, photo processing, data cleanup, e-mail delivery, payment infrastructure and ongoing verification. Premium access keeps the service maintainable while still allowing a free preview.
What DULIN is not
DULIN is not a safety authority and does not replace official Icelandic road, weather or travel warnings. It is a planning layer that helps you ask better questions before you go.
For current conditions, users should verify roads, weather, rivers, aviation restrictions, national park rules, protected-area guidance and local access with official Icelandic sources. DULIN can highlight planning signals, but it cannot grant permission, guarantee safety or replace judgment on the day.
