DULIN

10 days around Iceland's Ring Road

An adaptable editorial outline with overnight areas and shorter alternatives.

Choose the right scope

This has several transfer days and fewer spare days than the longer outline. It assumes summer travel planning, suitable conditions and realistic daily road calculations. In winter or disrupted conditions, choose a smaller region and more time at one base.

This is an editorial planning example, with overnight areas rather than bookings. It is not a recorded traveller's trip or a current access report. It contains no calculated driving times. Add your actual accommodation and stops to a private DULIN trip and calculate each complete road day before relying on the sequence.

Day 1: Arrival and Reykjavík

Use the arrival for supplies, vehicle arrangements and rest. Decide on the loop only after checking the coming regional conditions.

Overnight area: Reykjavík area

Shorter alternative: Keep a South and West Iceland plan if the complete loop no longer fits.

Day 2: Golden Circle and western South Coast

Choose the main Golden Circle visits, then calculate the exact transfer to the night's accommodation. Avoid stacking another long activity into the same day.

Overnight area: Western South Coast

Shorter alternative: Remain near Reykjavík and omit a detour to preserve the next day's departure.

Day 3: South Coast to Vík

Choose waterfall stops and one short walk. Keep beach access separate from the village visit and follow current local restrictions.

Overnight area: Vík area

Shorter alternative: Reduce the day to the transfer and a nearby village activity.

Day 4: Southeast Iceland

Choose a specific Vatnajökull visitor area or marked walk and calculate the onward transfer separately. Glacier travel is a separately arranged specialist activity.

Overnight area: Southeast Iceland or Höfn area

Shorter alternative: Shorten the walk or stay farther west if access or the transfer does not fit.

Day 5: East Iceland

Use the coastal transfer as the principal task. Add a town visit or short walk only after the complete overnight approach fits the driving budget.

Overnight area: Egilsstaðir area or another verified eastern base

Shorter alternative: Keep to the verified main-road approach and omit fjord or mountain detours.

Day 6: East Iceland to Mývatn

Check the entire crossing to the north before departure. Keep arrival activities short and distinguish geothermal viewing sites from bathing facilities.

Overnight area: Mývatn area

Shorter alternative: Remove arrival activities; if the transfer is unsuitable, revise overnight bookings and the remaining loop.

Day 7: Mývatn and the north

Choose a local walk or managed visit before the onward transfer. A Diamond Circle excursion needs its own complete road and activity calculation.

Overnight area: Akureyri area

Shorter alternative: Use only nearby Mývatn stops and omit the wider excursion.

Day 8: Northwest to West Iceland

Treat this as a transfer day and put fuel, meals and the overnight destination into the plan. Additional coastal detours are optional.

Overnight area: Borgarnes area or a chosen western base

Shorter alternative: Reduce the day's sights and stay at a suitable earlier base if needed.

Day 9: West Iceland and Reykjavík

Choose a western local visit before returning toward Reykjavík. Include the full airport-region return; Snæfellsnes is an optional extension requiring extra time.

Overnight area: Reykjavík or airport region

Shorter alternative: Return directly and preserve the final buffer.

Day 10: Departure buffer

Keep vehicle return and the actual flight as the fixed commitments. The loop is complete only when the return fits the schedule.

Overnight area: Departure or a separately booked extra night

Shorter alternative: Omit all optional visits and use the airport-area buffer.

Turn the outline into your own trip

  1. Enter arrival, departure, vehicle type and the travel dates.
  2. Add exact overnight addresses as private points and choose a few main stops per day.
  3. Calculate driving with those points; include walks, meals, bookings and spare time.
  4. Check official road and weather information again before each travel day. Recalculate after changing the route.

Keep Highlands outings, river crossings and Westfjords extensions as separate plans. Do not add them as implied shortcuts between these overnight areas.
