DULIN

14 days around Iceland with regional breathing room

An adaptable editorial outline with overnight areas and shorter alternatives.

Choose the right scope

A summer main-road outline with additional regional days, rather than an automatic Highlands or Westfjords extension. Keep spare time available for changed conditions. Extra days do not guarantee an F-road, river crossing or exposed trail is suitable.

This is an editorial planning example, with overnight areas rather than bookings. It is not a recorded traveller's trip or a current access report. It contains no calculated driving times. Add your actual accommodation and stops to a private DULIN trip and calculate each complete road day before relying on the sequence.

Day 1: Arrival and Reykjavík

Arrange the vehicle, supplies and a rested start. Make the first overnight easy to reach from the actual arrival.

Overnight area: Reykjavík area

Shorter alternative: Stay near the airport if arrival changes make the onward drive unsuitable.

Day 2: Golden Circle

Choose main stops and a short walk around the available time. Keep fixed activities and the overnight approach in the same calculation.

Overnight area: Western South Coast

Shorter alternative: Use fewer main stops and keep an earlier overnight.

Day 3: South Coast to Vík

Combine the transfer with selected waterfalls and keep optional viewpoints removable.

Overnight area: Vík area

Shorter alternative: Use the transfer and one local stop as the whole day.

Day 4: Vík and southeast transfer

Choose a short morning visit and check current coastal warnings before continuing toward a specific national-park visitor area.

Overnight area: Southeast Iceland

Shorter alternative: Skip the morning detour or retain the same base if onward access is unsuitable.

Day 5: Vatnajökull visitor area

Give a marked walk or a booked specialist outing its own day. Confirm the exact meeting point, parking, walking time and return arrangements.

Overnight area: The same southeast base or Höfn area

Shorter alternative: Choose a shorter marked visit or a visitor-centre day; glacier access is a separate specialist decision.

Day 6: Southeast to East Iceland

Plan the coastal transfer, supplies and accommodation first. Keep any fjord stop secondary to the complete driving day.

Overnight area: A chosen eastern base

Shorter alternative: Omit side roads and use an earlier verified overnight when necessary.

Day 7: East Iceland local day

Stay with a short local walk or town visit. This regional day can absorb a delayed transfer without extending every later day.

Overnight area: The same eastern base

Shorter alternative: Use the day for rest, supplies or completing the previous transfer.

Day 8: East Iceland to Mývatn

Check the whole northern approach. Keep a short arrival plan and avoid a major excursion after a long transfer.

Overnight area: Mývatn area

Shorter alternative: Remove arrival visits or revise the onward overnight if conditions require it.

Day 9: Mývatn local day

Choose geothermal viewing and a marked walk, keeping bathing bookings separate. Confirm each site's current visitor rules.

Overnight area: The same Mývatn base

Shorter alternative: Use a shorter walk or managed indoor visit and leave the wider excursion out.

Day 10: North Iceland and Akureyri

Select one wider northern outing or a shorter transfer toward Akureyri. Count the entire return if sleeping at the same base.

Overnight area: Akureyri area

Shorter alternative: Keep only the transfer and a town visit.

Day 11: Northwest to West Iceland

Plan the western transfer with meals, fuel and the final overnight. Preserve a shorter option before adding coastal stops.

Overnight area: Borgarnes area

Shorter alternative: Use an earlier western base and remove optional detours.

Day 12: Snæfellsnes or a western buffer

Visit one sector of the peninsula if the return and accommodation fit. This day can instead absorb earlier delays or provide a shorter western visit.

Overnight area: Snæfellsnes area or the western base

Shorter alternative: Stay on the shorter western option and preserve the return buffer.

Day 13: Return to Reykjavík or airport region

Choose any final local activity around the complete return journey. Refuelling and vehicle-return arrangements belong in tomorrow's schedule.

Overnight area: Reykjavík or airport region

Shorter alternative: Return directly and retain the extra time.

Day 14: Departure buffer

Work backward from the actual flight and vehicle return. Add no distant final stop to use up an apparent spare hour.

Overnight area: Departure or a separately booked extra night

Shorter alternative: Use the airport-area buffer and omit optional visits.

Turn the outline into your own trip

  1. Enter arrival, departure, vehicle type and the travel dates.
  2. Add exact overnight addresses as private points and choose a few main stops per day.
  3. Calculate driving with those points; include walks, meals, bookings and spare time.
  4. Check official road and weather information again before each travel day. Recalculate after changing the route.

Keep Highlands outings, river crossings and Westfjords extensions as separate plans. Do not add them as implied shortcuts between these overnight areas.
