Choose the right scope
Use this as a summer main-road outline. Choose exact stops and accommodation before calculating each day. Keep the south-coast turnaround near Vík; adding the glacier lagoons changes the travel balance.
This is an editorial planning example, with overnight areas rather than bookings. It is not a recorded traveller's trip or a current access report. It contains no calculated driving times. Add your actual accommodation and stops to a private DULIN trip and calculate each complete road day before relying on the sequence.
Day 1: Arrival and Reykjavík
Collect the vehicle only when ready to drive. Keep this day for food, supplies and a short city visit rather than a long arrival-day transfer.
Overnight area: Reykjavík or your chosen nearby base
Shorter alternative: Stay near the arrival airport if the flight or fatigue makes the onward drive unsuitable.
Day 2: Golden Circle
Choose two or three main visits and place any fixed booking in the day first. Include time to park, walk and eat between stops.
Overnight area: Reykjavík or the western South Coast
Shorter alternative: Use fewer stops and return to the same base if weather or the full day budget requires it.
Day 3: South Coast to Vík
Combine the transfer with selected waterfall visits. Keep the overnight location fixed and remove optional stops before extending the day.
Overnight area: Vík area
Shorter alternative: Stop earlier along the South Coast and revise the following day's base rather than finishing a late drive.
Day 4: Vík and return west
Choose a village or coastal walk, then calculate the return to the western base. Follow local beach warnings and choose an inland alternative when coastal access is unsuitable.
Overnight area: Reykjavík or Borgarnes area
Shorter alternative: Skip the exposed coastal visit and use the day for the return and a sheltered local activity.
Day 5: Snæfellsnes approach
Travel to the peninsula and choose one coastal sector. An overnight on or near the peninsula avoids treating the entire coast as one transfer day.
Overnight area: Snæfellsnes area
Shorter alternative: Stay near the approach and leave the farther sector for tomorrow if the driving budget is already full.
Day 6: Snæfellsnes and return
Select a short walk or a few viewing stops before returning toward Reykjavík or the airport region. Reserve enough time for the complete return journey.
Overnight area: Reykjavík or airport region
Shorter alternative: Use the return as the main objective and omit the peninsula detours.
Day 7: Departure buffer
Plan vehicle return, refuelling and airport check-in around the actual flight. Add an optional nearby visit only after checking the operator and current access.
Overnight area: Departure or a separately booked extra night
Shorter alternative: Go directly to the airport area if there is any uncertainty about the available time.
Turn the outline into your own trip
- Enter arrival, departure, vehicle type and the travel dates.
- Add exact overnight addresses as private points and choose a few main stops per day.
- Calculate driving with those points; include walks, meals, bookings and spare time.
- Check official road and weather information again before each travel day. Recalculate after changing the route.
Keep Highlands outings, river crossings and Westfjords extensions as separate plans. Do not add them as implied shortcuts between these overnight areas.
