Puffins in Iceland: season, best regions and map

Plan Iceland puffin watching around the nesting season, protected cliffs, safe viewing and established puffin regions.

Puffins in Iceland: season, best regions and map

Puffins are one of Iceland's most searched wildlife experiences, but timing and behavior matter. They are most relevant as a summer planning topic, and even then a puffin cliff is not a promise. Wind, visibility, nesting sensitivity, local access rules and the time of day can decide whether a place is worth visiting.

Use DULIN puffin records as a route-planning layer. Check whether a cliff or coastal stop fits your drive, whether there are safe marked viewpoints, whether drone use is restricted, and whether a nearby waterfall, hike, campsite or lighthouse can make the day work even if the birds are distant or not visible.

When can you see puffins in Iceland?

Puffin watching is mainly a late-spring and summer activity while birds are nesting on coastal cliffs and islands. Exact arrival and departure varies, so use May through August as a practical planning window rather than a guarantee. At Dyrholaey the wider bird nesting season is treated as May through September and access can be restricted to protect birdlife.

Where puffin planning makes sense

Protect burrows and cliff edges

Puffins nest in burrows, so apparently solid grass near a cliff can be undermined and fragile. Stay on marked paths and platforms, keep back from the edge, use binoculars and never step across ropes for a closer photograph. Avoid drones, loud behavior and blocking a bird's route between the sea and its burrow.

Quick answers

What time of day is best for puffins?

There is no universal hour. Light, sea conditions, feeding patterns and the site all matter. Plan enough time for a patient distant view and leave if the site is crowded or the birds react to visitors.

Can I photograph puffins with a drone?

Do not fly near nesting cliffs or protected bird areas. Some sites prohibit drones outright, and disturbance is the deciding problem even where a map does not show an airspace restriction.

Check the Dyrholaey bird guidance, current Dyrholaey access framework, Akurey protection rules and current signs or ranger instructions at the site.

Puffin timing by season

Puffins are a spring and summer planning topic, with the nesting period providing the main viewing window. Arrival, breeding success and departure vary, so avoid promising a precise sighting from the calendar alone. By late summer, a location that was active earlier can become much less reliable.

Time of day also affects whether birds are at sea or near burrows. Local guidance, weather and patience are more useful than a universal “best hour.” Plan enough time to watch quietly from an established viewpoint, but keep a nearby coastal or lighthouse stop as a backup.

Quick answers

Can Dyrhólaey close during puffin season?

Yes. The responsible authority can restrict access between 1 May and 25 June when bird protection requires it. Check current notices and obey gates, ropes and ranger instructions.

How close should I get to puffins?

Remain on marked paths and platforms and let the birds choose the distance. Do not stand between a bird and its burrow or the sea, and never step onto soft cliff-top vegetation for a photograph.

Protected bird areas change

Check current Dyrhólaey access guidance and the rules for the exact protected area. The agency's Akurey guidance explains its landing and drone restrictions.
